Welcome to the Norfolk Hillwalking Club, and no, we do not spend all our time walking up Norfolk hills! Now that we have clarified that point, how did we start, what exactly do we do and where do we do it?
Way back in 1977, following a meeting that took place in Norwich, the Anglian Fell and Rock Club was formed. In its early days, the Club catered for all types of activist, including rock climbers, hence the word Rock in the name. The proportion of rock climbers to walkers was quite small and over the years the rock enthusiasts have formed a very successful club specifically for rock climbers. As the words Rock, and to some extent "Anglian" and "Fell" proved misleading, a decision therefore was taken during 1996 to change the club name to reflect the main pursuit of the Club. Hence the Norfolk Hillwalking Club emerged and a new era began.
As our name implies, the main aim of the Club is to provide the opportunity for those living in the Norfolk area to experience the hills and mountains of the British Isles, and on occasions, further afield. This is achieved by organising day trips to areas such as Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and the South Downs as well as weekend trips to areas such as the Lake District, North, Mid and South Wales, Scotland and its Islands, Dartmoor and the Yorkshire Dales. The Club provides transport in a hired minibus.
Day trips are usually on a Sunday, although some Saturdays do occur. We leave Norwich at 6.30 am with various pick up points available en route and, after a breakfast stop, arrive at our destination around 11.00 am, depending on location. One important point to note is that we do not appoint any official leaders for walks. However, if you are new to walking, or hate the thought of navigation, do not panic. There is always someone to tag along with if you wish, or feel free to explore on your own.
